Chamois Cream and Why We Need It

10674798708

Chamois cream’ is something of a taboo subject, even within the cycling community. From experience, it’s rarely discussed and, when it is, conversation moves on swiftly.

We’ve even asked two professionals about their preference. Neither gave very much away. Whether this is due to its personal nature, wanting to keep a ‘secret weapon’ to yourself or, the inverse: a refusal to admit to under-performance of the product, it’s seldom mentioned. That said, it’s something that cyclists hold dear and is always a carefully considered purchase.

A simple online search will allow you to discover the fascinating origins and development of the chamois in cycling legwear, as well as the not-so-pleasant methods used to prevent soreness when on the bike before their invention, but suffice it to say that regular and distance cyclists couldn’t do without their chamois cream. The question is why such a cream is required now that pads themselves are so technologically-advanced.

Anti-bacterial and generally viscous, chamois creams soothe and cool the skin, and protect against the soreness caused by friction. Even the most expensive kit can rub against the skin, particularly if it’s close-fitting, and eliminating this friction is essential to comfortable riding.

The last thing any regular cyclist wants is saddle sores or, worse still, an abscess. Either would result in time off the bike, the latter considerably more. Be it a balm, a cream or a powder, the product will feature a combination of ingredients carefully blended together. Some there for their properties, some for their scent. The key here is choosing the best one. That, and recognising that it’s about prevention rather than cure.

Many cyclists would seemingly opt for antiseptic healing cream, both as a substitute for a decent chamois cream and as a follow-up treatment for discomfort. Choosing the appropriate chamois cream for your needs - and something specifically designed for on-bike use will ensure that your time on the bike as well as follow-up routine is far more straightforward.

Our Luxury Chamois Cream is enriched with natural aloe vera, witch hazel, shea butter and sunflower oil. It also deeply moisturises the skin, is free from parabens and formaldehyde, and contains provitamins. Simple decision, really.
