How to Clean a Motorcycle Chain - An essential Job; Made Easy.

Along with routinely checking your tyre pressures and engine oil, regular chain cleaning and lubrication is one of those important, regular motorcycle maintenance jobs undertaken by new and old riders alike.

It’s a very simple, but critical process that only takes a few minutes to do, but one that will extend the life and performance of both your motorcycle chain and sprockets! Remember: chain cleaner and lubricant is cheap, motorcycle chains aren't!

Stage 1: Prepare your bike

Cleaning and lubing a motorcycle chain is a fairly straight forward process, made a lot easier if your bike has a centre stand or is compatible with a paddock stand, both options allowing the motorcycles rear wheel to be lifted into the air and so spun freely.

However, if you don’t have one of these, don’t panic, you can use your motorcycles kickstand and simply move it along the drive/garage - Cleaning each section at a time.

Stage 2: Scrutinize the motorcycle chain (and sprockets)

Chain cleaning and lubricating is a great opportunity to get up close and personal with your whole drivetrain, checking its overall condition.

Ensuring your sprockets (both front and rear) are in good condition and not overly worn. If you find the sprocket teeth have a lot of wear and/or the chain is overly slack/has tight spots it might be time to get a replacement. Check your bikes manual for chain adjusting/tensioning instructions.

Use Chain Cleaner on Chain

Stage 3: Spray chain with chain cleaner

So, your happy with your chain and sprockets but they are caked in dirt and grime. It's time to start tackling that! Our Biodegradable Motorcycle Chain Cleaner has been specifically formulated to quickly and safely remove dirt, lube and heavy chain grime. Its unique formula breaks down oil and grease to leave the entire chain sparkling clean and contaminant free, don’t be shy about really soaking things down, new motorcycle chains aren’t cheap!.

Agitate Grime on Chain

Stage 4: Agitate the chain

With the chain soaked, use the Muc-Off Chain Brush, its multifaceted shaped head is designed to clean three sides of the chain at the same time as well as in between links and rollers. Be thorough and persistent, it will pay off!

The cleaner the surface, the better chain lube will adhere.

Re-spray Chain with chain oil

Stage 5: Re-spray the motorcycle chain

To finish off the cleaning process, re-soak the motorcycle chain with Muc-Off Biodegradable Motorcycle Chain Cleaner to further remove all the agitated dirt and grime.

Stage 6: Dry off the chain

For motorcycle chain lube to best adhere to the chain, it needs to be applied to a dry surface. Take time to fully dry the chain with blue roll or a Muc-Off Microfibre Towel, removing all of the chain cleaner prior to applying lubricant.

Stage 7: Picking the right lube for your chains needs.

Choosing the right lubricant for your riding and your chains needs is essential. At Muc-Off, we offer 3 options: Dry PTFE Chain Lube, Endurance Chain Lube and Extreme Chain Lube each with specific applications and properties but all suitable for ‘O’, ‘X’ and ‘Z’ Ring chains.

Muc-Off Dry Chain Lube is formulated to hold up to the extreme pressures that are applied to a Motorcycles drive chain. It’s a highly versatile, Dry weather chain lubricant that has superior penetrative qualities ensuring that every part of the chain link is lubricated. Our advanced ‘Dry Formula’ creates a clean, durable and protective layer that inhibits rust and corrosion! The added PTFE has exceptionally low surface friction to provide incredible drivetrain efficiency without attracting contaminants. It’s clean, and it’s easy to use.

Muc-Off All-Weather Chain Lube, ideal for all year chain protection. It's unique water repellent, ceramic, non-fling formula penetrates deep into the chain links. It creates a durable protective coating which will guard your chain against corrosion, metal to metal wear in all weather conditions.

Muc-Off Wet Chain Lube was developed to provide maximum protection, no matter what extreme weather conditions you throw at your chain! Wet Lube polymer formula penetrates deep into the chains links, to reduce wear and friction to a minimum in even the harshest of conditions. Our non-drying hydrophobic lubricant film sticks to every link even during a long, rain soaked ride!

All-Weather chain lube

Stage 8: Lubricating the chain

With your lubricant of choice now selected it’s time to apply it. Give the can a vigorous shake and apply the lubricant evenly to all sides of the chain - wipe away any overspray.

For best results we recommend leaving your bike at least 15 minutes before riding, for best results leave overnight.

Now, get out and ride!

And just like that you’re all set and ready to ride! Motorcycle chain maintenance is a very simple job that will greatly extend the life of your chain and sprockets.

Depending on the conditions you ride in, it’s a good idea to get into the habit of doing this regularly, especially if you ride in wet or dirty conditions or are covering a lot of miles. Ride safe out there!
