Winter is tough on a motorcycle. Rain and road salt can settle around fasteners, engine cases, the swingarm and other exposed parts. If the bike stays damp, corrosion has a chance to take hold. A simple routine—remove the salt, dry the bike and protect vulnerable surfaces—can help keep it in good shape through winter.
Why do motorcycles rust more in winter?
Road salt and moisture are the main troublemakers. Spray from wet roads reaches places you may miss during a quick wash, including lower forks, wheels and the underside of the bike. Leaving that salty residue in place gives corrosion more time to develop. Even a motorcycle stored for winter can be exposed to damp air, so it pays to clean and protect it before putting it away.
How to protect your motorcycle with HCB-1
Muc-Off HCB-1 Harsh Conditions Barrier creates a thin, transparent anti-corrosion film. Muc-Off says the barrier remains active for up to 12 months after application. That makes it useful both for riders facing salty roads and for bikes spending the winter in storage.

1. Remove salt and grime
After a ride on treated roads, rinse off salt as soon as practical. Pay attention to wheels, spokes, the swingarm, lower forks and engine cases. If the bike is dirty, use Muc-Off Motorcycle Cleaner and rinse it thoroughly. Let hot parts cool before washing or applying protective products.
2. Dry the bike thoroughly
Use a clean microfibre cloth on accessible areas, particularly exposed metal, fasteners and places where water collects. HCB-1 should go onto a clean, dry surface. Before coating a whole area, test a small spot for surface compatibility.

3. Apply a thin, even film
With the motorcycle cool and out of direct sunlight, shake the HCB-1 can and spray a thin, even layer over the surfaces you want to protect. Its extension straw can help you reach tight spots. Let the coating dry completely; Muc-Off advises allowing up to 24 hours to cure for best protection. You can check coverage with a UV torch because the formula contains a UV dye.
Keep HCB-1 off tyre treads, brake discs, pads and other braking surfaces. Cover the brakes before spraying. Follow the label's application instructions for your bike and its finishes.
What about the chain?
Give the chain its own routine after salty rides. Clean it with Muc-Off Motorcycle Chain Cleaner, let it dry, then apply a suitable motorcycle chain lubricant. Motorcycle Wet Weather Chain Lube is Muc-Off's option for wet conditions. HCB-1 is a corrosion barrier; it does not replace regular chain lubrication.
How often should I repeat the routine?
Rinse road salt off as soon as practical after riding on treated roads, and wash the bike when grime builds up. Check the chain regularly and clean and lubricate it as your riding conditions and motorcycle manual require. HCB-1's barrier is designed to remain active for up to 12 months, so Muc-Off says you do not need to reapply it after every wash. Inspect coverage and follow the product instructions if you need to treat a missed area.
Whether you're commuting all winter or parking up until spring, the habit is straightforward: rinse away salt, wash when needed, dry thoroughly and protect exposed surfaces. A little attention after winter rides makes it easier to catch corrosion before it spreads.
