Want to get your knee down like a pro? We caught up with Muc-Off sponsored rider and absolute legend Scott Redding to break down exactly how to do it properly. No ego. No nonsense. Just straight-talking tips from someone who’s done it at the highest level.

Here’s how to actually get your knee down at a track day – Redding style:

1. Tyres and Tyre Warmers – Confidence is Key

“Make sure you have good tyres and tyre warmers so you’ve got grip and confidence.”

First things first: you need tyres that can handle the job. Rocking up to a track day with worn-out rubber or cold slicks? That’s a one-way ticket to the gravel trap. Get quality tyres, use warmers, and make sure your grip is solid before you even think about dragging a knee.

2. Get a Grippy Seat – Stay Planted

“Make sure you have a grippy seat for your arse to grip to.”

When you're hanging off the bike, you don’t want to be sliding around like you’re on an ice rink. A grippy seat helps you stay locked in so you can focus on your body position – not clinging on for dear life.

3. Cheeky Business – Body Position Basics

“Get your ass on the edge of the seat – so one cheek is on. Then lean into the corner.”

No need to reinvent the wheel here – classic race technique. Shift your body to the inside of the turn, drop that shoulder, and let the bike do its thing. You’re working with it, not against it.

4. Knee Out, and Back – The Magic Angle

“Sit on the bike in the garage and look down to see how far your knee is sticking out. Pull your knee out and back as far as possible – that’s a big tip.”

This one’s gold. Most riders stick the knee out straight – but Scott says the real trick is to pull it back too. This helps get your knee down with less lean angle, meaning you’re more stable and can ride faster, safer.

5. The Big One – Lean That F*cker Over!

“My final word? Once you get confident, lean that f*cker over!”

You heard the man. Getting your knee down isn’t just about the pose – it’s about commitment. Trust your tyres, trust your setup, and get stuck in. The knee will follow.

Public roads? Forget it.

Take it to the track, keep it safe.

So if you’re chasing that first knee-down moment – follow these steps, respect the track, and maybe give a nod to Scott when you hear that familiar scrape. 💥
