Your motorcycle chain takes a constant beating — dirt, water, power and suspension movement all at once. If your chain tension isn’t set correctly, performance suffers and wear accelerates fast.

Getting it right doesn’t take long — but it does start with proper maintenance.

Why Chain Tension Matters

Chains aren’t meant to run tight. As your suspension moves, the distance between sprockets changes.

  • Too tight = stress on the chain, sprockets and gearbox
  • Too loose = snatchy throttle, chain slap and uneven wear

Correct tension keeps power delivery smooth and protects your drivetrain.

Clean Before You Adjust

Always clean your chain before setting tension. Dirt and old lube can hide wear and throw off your measurements.

  • Use Muc-Off Motorcycle Chain Cleaner and a chain brush
  • Break down grime without damaging O-rings
  • Wipe the chain dry so it moves freely

A clean chain means accurate adjustment.

Measuring & Setting Chain Slack

Check your owner’s manual for the correct slack.

  • Measure midway between the sprockets
  • Push the chain up and down to find total movement
  • Rotate the wheel and check at several points — set tension at the tightest spot

To adjust:

  • Loosen the rear axle
  • Turn both adjusters evenly
  • Align the wheel correctly
  • Torque everything back to spec

Take your time — precision matters.

Lube to Lock It In

Once tension is set, protect it.

  • Apply chain lube to the inside of the chain
  • Choose Dry, Wet or All-Weather Chain Lube based on conditions
  • Wipe off excess to stop dirt sticking

Good lubrication reduces wear and helps your chain hold tension for longer.
