About the Role

We are looking for an enthusiastic experienced Tribologist. Capable of working on own initiative whilst maintaining engineering rigour. The ability to run tests, manage test data and to analyse/report results are a basic requirement. With aspects of pure R&D experience across multiple disciplines very beneficial: Tribological testing of lubricants and coatings, Lubricant formulation, tribology, data, analysis and microscopy.


Key responsibilities

Research & Development

  • Lead in selection of suitable Tribology test regimes
  • Define new internal test specifications and the management and refinement of current test specifications
  • Lead in the development of bespoke tribology tests and custom script creation


  • Understanding of Tribology and Lubrication
  • Undertake a wide variety of tests on bespoke Dynamometers and Bruker TriboLab
  • Full range of modules available allowing numerous ASTM/ISO standard Tribology tests
  • Management of tests and result data


  • Collate, manage and report on test data produced
  • Understanding of Statistical Analysis
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel – test data analysis and graphing
  • Microsoft Word/PowerPoint – test data, reporting and analysis results
  • Assists/undertake improvements in test data management
  • Analyse results and reports to stakeholders
  • Project Management of Formulations
  • Manage Tribology projects and report progress
  • Ability to convert and convey technical data and knowledge to other non-technical depts
  • Supply technical content for Marketing department on products and assist in creating content

White Light Interferometry

  • Understanding of Microscopy and WLI
  • Undertaking of tests and analysis of results using Bruker UMT software
  • The analysis and preparation of results of sample wear using White Light Interferometry (WLI) on Bruker Contour GT
  • The preparation and analysis of war and coatings samples


Ideal candidate


  • BSc or higher in Material Science and Engineering or a related subject
  • Experience in tribological testing and measurement
  • Experience in designing novel tribology tests to suit application
  • Experience in reporting technical information to all levels
  • Skilled in conveying technical information.
  • Skilled in liaising with key stake holders both internally and externally


  • Higher Qualification in Tribology
  • Experience using Bruker TrioLab and Contour White Light Interferometer
